A Russian Jew wanted to immigrate to Israel.
The local commissar calls him in for questioning and asks:
Q. Haven't we allowed you the right to worship in your Synagogue? A. Can't complain.
Q. Haven't we let you live in peace with your fellow Jews? A. Can't complain.
Q. Haven't we allowed you to travel freely within and beyond the village? A. Can't complain.
Q. Haven't we allowed you to teach your children Torah? A. Can't complain.
Q. Haven't we let you practice your profession? A. Can't complain.
Q. Then why do you want to go to Israel? A. "There, I can complain!"

The Last Will And Testament of Samuel Benjamin Cohen
"I Samuel Benjamin Cohen, being of sound mind hereby declare this to be my last will and testament. To my son Sheldon, my first born and the best dentist in the United States I leave one million dollars tax free. To my daughter Jayne who was wonderful and always helped her mother with the dishes and graduated from college. I leave one million dollars. To my loving wife I leave (whatever is not in her name already) two million dollars. Enjoy, sweetheart. Enjoy. To my brother-in-law Louie, who smoked fancy cigars, who lived with us ever since we got married, and who always said that I would never ever mention him in my will, HELLO LOUIE!" |

A new year signifies new opportunity, hope and a chance for personal change. The Jewish New Year arrives three months ahead of January and thus affords us a head start to put into action those most thought out good resolutions, which will set us on the road to a year of transforming potential to reality.
…This coming year will offer a choice to the American people, as well, to affect the next four years and ultimately the future of our country. While congressmen must be elected every two years, the presidential vote occurs only once in four years. Yet, G-d Almighty the King of all kings is up for reelection each and every year…
The first of the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah brings with it the obligation to choose and then crown G-d as our king. The Hebrew word for king, Melech, unlike its English counterpart, is defined as a sovereign whose sole power derives from the freedom of choice of his people to submit to his rule. (A king who reigns by force is referred to as Moshel, ruler.) Through the blowing of the Shofar and the recitation of various "verses of Kingship," we coronate our G-dly king, thus enabling creation as a whole to continue to exist. In Kabbalah it states that the world derives from the Divine desire to be king and G-d waits for us to choose Him as our ruler so that He may continue the constant act of creation.
Thus, G-d must also go on the campaign trail. The Chassidic master Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi described the month of Elul, which directly precedes Rosh Hashanah and the Divine coronation, as a time when the king leaves his palace to mingle with and assist his nation. When the king is in the royal palace, appointments are required and guards stand at the gates. When the king is out and about, he receives all with a cheerful countenance, listens to requests and provides assistance.
So, too, is the analogy of G-d to that king in the field. This month is a time when the gates of heaven are wide open and all prayers and supplications are heard and answered… Though G-d campaigning may bear some resemblance to our presidential candidates running for office, there are many critical differences, the most important being that G-d is much more likely to fulfill His campaign promises, than any human politician. So, take this opportunity to open your hearts and minds to G-d, who will surely respond in kind.
On behalf of my wife Hadassah, our children, Meir, and Elisheva and the Chabad Jewish Center, we share our heartfelt blessings and wishes to everyone for a Shanah Tova – a happy, healthy and sweet new year! |

Rabbi & Pope
The Chief Rabbi of Israel and the Pope are in a meeting in Rome. The Rabbi notices an unusually fancy phone on a side table in the Pope's private chambers.
"What is that phone for?" he asks the pontiff.
"It's my direct line to the Lord."
The Rabbi is skeptical, and the Pope notices. The Pope insists the Rabbi try it out, and, indeed, he is connected to the Lord. The Rabbi holds a lengthy discussion with G-d Almighty. After hanging up the Rabbi says, "Thank you very much. This is great! But listen, I want to pay for my phone charges."
The Pope, of course, refuses, but the Rabbi is steadfast and finally, the pontiff gives in. He checks the counter on the phone and says, "All right! The charges were 100,000 Lira" ($56). And the Chief Rabbi gladly hands over the payment.
A few months later… (We interrupt this program for a commercial break) Please click here to continue… the Pope is in Jerusalem on an official visit. In the Chief Rabbi's chambers, he sees a phone identical to his and learns it also is a direct line to the Lord.
The Pope remembers he has an urgent matter that requires divine consultation and asks if he can use the Rabbi's phone. The Rabbi agrees, hands him the phone, and the Pope chats away.
After hanging up, the Pope offers to pay for the phone charges. Of course, the Chief Rabbi refuses to accept payment. After the Pope insists, the Rabbi relents and looks on the phone counter.
"1 Shekel 50" ($0.42).
The Pope looks surprised, "Why so cheap?"
The Rabbi smiles, "Local call."

JOKE # 3
One day a Chinese man and his Jewish friend go to a bar to get a few drinks. A few drinks later, the Jewish guy lets out some pent up anger, "You Chinese ought to be ashamed of yourselves for Pearl Harbor. Sneaky little snakes, bombing all of those unsuspecting sailors, shame on you!"
The chinaman replied, "Hey! Wait a minute, that wasn't us! I'm Chinese. Pearl Harbor was done by Japanese".
The Jewish guy said…for the rest click here "Ahh, Chinese, Japanese, what's the difference?"
So the Chinaman says, "Well, what about your people? Sinking the Titanic and killing all those helpless women and children, and you have the right to criticize about Pearl Harbor?!"
The Jewishman, bewildered, exclaimed, "What are you yapping about? Jews didn't sink the Titanic, it hit an iceberg, you idiot!"
The Chinaman said, "Ahh, iceberg, Goldberg, what's the difference?" |

THE WEEKLY JOKE
Are you an American-Jew or a Jewish-American?
When Golda Meir held the office of Israeli Prime Minister, she tried to encourage Henry Kissinger to make Israel a top priority.
He sent her a letter: "I would like to inform you that first and foremost, I am an American citizen. Then, secondly, I am the Secretary of State. And it is only thirdly do I consider myself a Jew."
To which Golda Meir wittily responded: "In Israel, we read from right to left." # 2 - A true story:
It was late at night and Heidi, who was expecting her second child, was home alone with her 3-year old daughter Katelyn. When Heidi started going into labor, she called "911".
Due to a power outage at the time, only one paramedic responded to the call. The house was very, very dark, so the paramedic asked 3-year old Katelyn to hold a flashlight high over her mommy so he could see while he helped deliver the baby.
Very diligently, Katelyn did as she was asked. Heidi pushed and pushed, and after a little while baby Connor was born.
The paramedic lifted him by his little feet and spanked him on his bottom. Connor began to cry.
The paramedic then thanked Katelyn for her help and asked the wide-eyed 3-year old what she thought about what she had just witnessed.
Katelyn quickly responded, "He shouldn't have crawled in there in the first place. Smack him again!" FOR YOUR CONCERNED PARENTS :-)

However, with the heralding in of the Days of Moshiach, this that G-d is everywhere at all times in all things will be revealed. As such, the G-dly essence that encompasses all of reality will be revealed, and thus, one will be able to sense G-d in everything that they do. ELUL BULLETS
As the last month of the Jewish year, Elul is traditionally a time of introspection and stocktaking -- a time to review one's deeds and spiritual progress over the past year and prepare for the upcoming "Days of Awe" of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. As the month of "Divine Mercy and Forgiveness," Elul is a most opportune time for teshuvah ("return" to G-d), prayer, charity, and increased Ahavat Yisrael (love for a fellow Jew) in the quest for self-improvement and coming closer to G-d. Chassidic master Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi likens the month of Elul to a time when "the king is in the field" and, in contrast to when he is in the royal palace, "everyone who so desires is permitted to meet him, and he receives them all with a cheerful countenance and shows a smiling face to them all." The following are some of the basic customs and practices for the month of Elul: Each day of the month of Elul (except for Shabbat [it's never permitted to blow the shofar on Shabbat {even if Rosh Hashanah falls out on Shabbat}] and the last day of Elul), we sound the shofar (ram's horn) as a call to repentance. When writing a letter or meeting one another, we bless one another by including the greeting Ketivah vachatimah tovah--which roughly translates as "May you be inscribed and sealed for a good year." Chapter 27 of the Book of Psalms is added to daily prayers, in the morning and afternoon. The Baal Shem Tov instituted the custom of reciting three additional chapters of Psalms each day, from the 1st of Elul until Yom Kippur (on Yom Kippur the remaining 36 chapters are recited, thereby completing the entire book of Psalms). Elul is a good time to have one's tefillin and mezuzot checked by an accredited scribe to ensure that they are in good condition and fit for use. During the last week of Elul, in the days leading up to Rosh Hashanah, the Slichot prayers are recited, the first night at midnight, the following days in the early morning. May you be inscribed and sealed for a good year Chabad Jewish Community Center of Whatcom county 717 High Street Bellingham, WA 98225 email: info@jewishbellingham.com phone: 360-933-4818 web: www.JewishBellingham.com Help Chabad of Whatcom County Help Others in Whatcom County Donations: www.JewishBellingham.com/Donate All Contributions are Tax-Deductible Join the Chai Monthly Club

CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS' JEWISH MOTHER: 'I don't care what you've discovered, you didn't call, you didn't write...' MICHELANGELO'S JEWISH MOTHER: 'A ceiling you paint? Not good enough for you the walls, like the other children? Do you know how hard it is to get that schmutz off the ceiling?' NAPOLEON'S JEWISH MOTHER: 'You're not hiding your report card? Show me! Take your hand out of your jacket and show me!' ABRAHAM LINCOLN'S JEWISH MOTHER: 'Again with that hat! Why can't you wear a baseball cap like the other kids?' GEORGE WASHINGTON'S JEWISH MOTHER: 'Next time I catch you throwing money across the Potomac, you can kiss your allowance good-bye!' THOMAS EDISON'S JEWISH MOTHER: 'Okay, so I'm proud that you invented the electric light bulb. Now turn it off already and go to sleep!' PAUL REVERE'S JEWISH MOTHER: 'I don't care where you think you have to go, young man, midnight is long past your bedtime!' In this week's parshah, Moses continues his last speech to the People of Israel. He says: If the Jews keep to the Torah's commandments, they will be rich and satisfied in the Land of Israel. Moses criticizes the people for the sins they did over their forty years in the desert: the sin of the Golden Calf; Korach's rebellion, the sin of the spies who spoke badly of Israel, and other sins. Then he tells them of G-d's forgiveness, and the second tablets they received after their repentance. Moses then speaks about the Land of Israel, which the Jews are about to enter. He says it is G-d's chosen land, flowing with milk and honey, and blessed with "seven kinds" of fruit and grain: Wheat, barley, grapes, figs, pomegranate, olives and honey dates. He commands them to destroy any idols in the land, and to always realize that the good they have comes from G-d. The final thing in the Parshah is the second chapter of the Shema, which talks about the rewards for doing mitzvot and the punishments for not doing them. From the Chassidic Masters (excerpted) Ubechol meodecha is usually translated and "with all your might." But "might" is only an approximate rendition of the Hebrew word meod. This translation is also inconsistent with the logic of the verse: If we are being told to sacrifices all our desires ("with all your heart") and even our very lives ("with all your soul") for the sake of G-d, what is added by the words "and with all your might"? Indeed, what more can be said? The precise meaning of the word meod is "very" or "more so." Ubechol meodecha could therefore be understood as with all your veryness or with all your beyondness -- that is, above and beyond your currently defined self. The Torah is saying: after you have attained your personal ultimate (with all your heart and with all your soul) in your love of G-d, reach higher yet. Relate to Him on His terms, surmounting the finiteness of your own being. (click here for the entire kabbalistic thought)

Talk about a Blockbuster having a lot of sequels. This Monday will mark the Ten Commandments #3321! (scroll down for the video) FACT: Shavuot is one of the 5 biblical Holidays. Shavuot is of equal importance in the Torah and for G-d as Rosh Hashana, Yom Kippur and Passover! FACT: EVERY Jew was at Sinai 3321 years ago to receive the Ten Commandments and Torah Directly from G-d. (Speaking of receiving: Kabbalisitc Jewish tradition teaches that every year on the holiday of Shavuot, when the Ten Commandments are read properly, we re-live the experience exactly as it was at Sinai!) Because of the above fact you will find in vibrant Jewish Communities with proper Torah-True education, you will find that the most well attendant day to synagogue of the year – even more than Yom Kippur!! - is none other than - the First day of Shavuot where ALL Men Woman and Children of all ages are present to hear the reading of the 10 Commandments properly from the Torah, and to relive the Sinai Experience.
