The Code of Jewish law rules that from the 15th of Av and on, as the days grow shorter and the nights longer, a Jew should increase his Torah study each night.
The evil inclination says to the Jewish Child: “Aha! Now that the nights are getting longer,
you have more time to sleep and relax!”
Answers the Jewish child: “Foolish Yetzer Horah, you are the biggest ignoramus there could
be! How could you not know that starting from the 15th of Av the very opposite is true –
we must spend even more time learning Torah?! G-d wants to see what I will do when I am
left on my own at home and I look outside and see non-Jewish children going to sleep earlier.”
What does a Jewish child do? Every night, he takes a bit more of his own time and devotes
it to learning Torah and fulfilling G-d’s commandments.
