Bellingham Mikvah Project

  • Welcome

    To the Bellingham Mikvah Project

Most Jews see the synagogue as the central institution in Jewish life, but Jewish law states that constructing a mikvah (ritual bath) takes precedence even over building a house of worship. Both a synagogue and a Torah scroll- among Judaism’s most venerated treasures- may be sold to raise funds for the building of a mikvah. In fact, in the eyes of Jewish law, a group of Jewish families living together do not attain the status of a community if they do not have a communal mikvah.

From Temple times to communist Russia, during freedom and oppression, this Mitzvah has been continually kept and Mikvaot can be found in every corner of the world! The goal of this project is to spiritually enrich our Jewish community by building a state-of-the-art mikvah where every Jewish woman will feel welcome, comfortable, and encouraged to visit. Through this project, we endeavor to revive an awareness of the extraordinary importance of the mikvah with the hope of enabling women to become more spiritually empowered and fulfilled.

We welcome you to join us in establishing our new mikvah facility which will be open and inviting to all members of our local Jewish community as well as visitors. In addition to the beautiful preparation room, we will also be including a separate preparation room for men who would like to use the Mikvah.
The total cost of the project is estimated at $450,000.
After years of development, architectural design, and applications for zoning and permits, we have begun the building phase of our Mikvah.

We are thankful to the Almighty for giving us the opportunity to take part in this momentous project that will impact our Jewish community just as it has throughout the generations for thousands of years.

Please join us in this great mitzvah!
